Land of Tea Herbs || Darjeeling || Himalayas Mountain || Heritage Railway || Kangchenjunga Peak.

Darjeeling is a city and a municipality in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located in the Lesser Himalayas at an elevation of 2,000 metres (6,700 ft). It is noted for its tea industry, its views of Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Darjeeling is the headquarters of the Darjeeling district which has a partially autonomous status called Gorkhaland Territorial Administration within the state of West Bengal. It is also a popular tourist destination in India.

The recorded history of the town starts from the early 19th century when the colonial administration under the British Raj set up a sanatorium and a military depot in the region. Subsequently, extensive tea plantations were established in the region and tea growers developed hybrids of black tea and created new fermentation techniques. The resultant distinctive Darjeeling tea is internationally recognized and ranks among the most popular black teas in the world. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway connects the town with the plains and has some of the few steam locomotives still in service in India.

Darjeeling has several British-style private schools, which attract pupils from all over India and a few neighbouring countries. The varied culture of the town reflects its diverse demographic milieu comprising Lepcha, Khampa, Gorkha, Newar, Sherpa, Bhutia, Bengali and other mainland Indian ethno-linguistic groups. Darjeeling, alongside its neighbouring town of Kalimpong, was the centre of the Gorkhaland social movement in the 1980s and summer 2017.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Camellia sinensis was first planted in the Darjeeling area in 1841 by Archibald Campbell who was working for the East India Company in this jungle-covered, sparsely-populated area to develop a hill station for use by the British stationed in Kolkata. At the time, the British were seeking a source of tea outside of China and had both recently discovered a second variety of the plant growing in the wilderness of Assam and smuggled seeds and plantings out of China. The Chinese variety (sinensis) was planted in Saharanpur Botanical Gardens and propagated in other Himalayan gardens where Campbell had acquired seeds from Kumaun via Nathaniel Wallich. While the original plantings succeeded, Campbell moved to Lebong where he and several other residents planted a new batch, in 1846, of both varieties (sinensis and assamica).A year after planting the first three Company experimental tea gardens in 1852, at Tukvar, Steinthal and Alubari, they reported having 2,000 tea plants and Robert Fortunewas sent to provide an expert opinion on the "suitableness of the climate and soil of the Hills for the cultivation and manufacture of Tea". While both varieties grew, the sinensis variety was flourishing, as it was found assamica preferred warmer and wetter growing conditions while sinensis had been selectively cultivated for higher elevations. The first commercial tea gardens were established in 1856 and by 1866 there were 39 tea gardens in Darjeeling, including the Makaibari Tea Estate which had established the region's first processing factory for withering and oxidation, necessary for the product to survive the months long journey down to Kolkata and over to Britain. Success of assamica at the nearby Dooars-Terai tea gardens led to infrastructure investments that would be extend up the Darjeeling Himalayan hill region, allowing more machinery and supplies to reach the tea gardens.Darjeeling's population had grown from less than a 100 in the 1830s to 95,000 people with 100 tea gardens in 1885, predominately Indian Gorkha and Lepcha migrants from Nepal, Bhutanese and Sikkim, as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the use of steamships and the Suez Canal reduced shipping times.

Darjeeling tea workers, 1890

After the British nationalized the East India Company it only ever leased the lands to tea garden owners on 30 year basis and maintained the practice of only permitting 40% to be used for tea crops with 40% being left natural and 20% for housing and facilities. Following Indian independence in 1947, practices shifted as British began to sell their stakes in the gardens to Indians and the 1953 Tea Act put the tea industry under the regulatory jurisdiction of the Tea Board of India. With more area being opened for tea crops at the expense of natural area and the introduction of pesticides and fertilizers, yields increased from 7.8 to 10 million kilograms between 1950 and 1960, though this came at the cost of increased soil instability. Despite a limited exemption for the tea industry the 1973 Foreign Exchange Regulations Act the new foreign ownership limitations resulted in Indian nationals becoming majority owners of the Darjeeling tea industry. As the Soviet Union replaced the United Kingdom as India's largest tea customers, Darjeeling gardens were supplemented with assamica plantings to accommodate their preference for that variety.

Production methods again shifted in the 1990s as Western Europe and Japan replaced the collapsed Soviet Union as Darjeeling's principal customers and new garden managers were bringing the principles of biodynamic agriculture to their practices. In 1988, Makaibari became the first tea estate in India to attain organic certification, followed by Tumsong, and the first to gain biodynamic certification, in 1993, followed by Ambootia. Darjeeling could not compete with other tea regions in terms of quantity or price (due to its geographic limitations, remoteness, slower plant growth, inability to mechanize, among other factors) or so it focused on quality. While the certifications provided an indication of a superior product, its practices also helped the gardens cope with erosion, slope instability and soil depletion that had become prevalent with pesticide and artificial fertilizer applications on the rainy hillsides. Yields had reached 14 million kilograms in 1994 but, with organic practices over much of the tea gardens, yields fell to an average of 9 million kilograms in the late-2010s. In pursuit of differentiating Darjeeling tea, the Darjeeling Planter's Association had been established, in 1983, to promote the product in other countries and a logo was copyrighted, consisting of the side profile of a woman holding two leaves and a bud and registered it in various countries and then, once it was eligible, internationally in the Madrid system. In 2000, the Tea Board created new licensing requirements for Darjeeling tea exporters, including product authentication and a prohibition on blending, which allowed them to issue certificates of origin. In 2004, Darjeeling tea became India's first product to receive legal geographical indication protection under the World Trade Organization's TRIPS Agreement and in 2011 it was given Protected Geographical Indication status in the European Union.

LATEST UPDATE:

Moderna said it’s “actively preparing” for the launch of its vaccine, which is one of four going through Phase 3 clinical trials in the US. The company has enrolled 30,000 people in the study and has said it could have enough data to seek emergency approval for the shot by the end of November.

Moderna's vaccine will last 30 days in the refrigerator, while Pfizer's only lasts five days, according to CNN. Moderna added that their vaccine will last 12 hours at room temperature. In the New York Times article, Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University, said the relative ease of handling the Moderna vaccine would give it a big advantage over Pfizer's.

Both Pfizer and Moderna said they expected to apply within weeks to the FDA for emergency authorization to begin vaccinating the public. Moderna said it would have 20 million doses ready by the end of 2020 and Pfizer said it would have about 50 million by then. Both vaccines require two shots, so 20 million doses would be enough for 10 million people. This news is certainly hopeful, but as Dr. Fauci recommended, we should continue to do what we can to prevent the spread of the disease until these vaccines actually become available to everyone.

In this Dragon country, the Land of Medicinal Herbs, Maintained by the four activities of the glorious Drukpa, May the rule of glorious Drukpa rise to the zenith And the melodies of its fame resound like thunder.

The following is a Zhabten composed by the current 70th Je Khenpo Tulku Jigme Chhoeda (He is believed to be the reincarnation of Maitreya) for the long life of His Majesty, the 4th Druk Gyalpo.

A Prayer for Long Life of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Excellent Dharma King of Bhutan.

May the Virtuous Prevail!

Amitabha, the dharma body which is primordially pure in its essence,

Avalokiteśvara, the enjoyment body which is by nature spontaneously accomplished,

Padmasambhava, the emanation body of all-pervading compassion,

May the Buddhas of the three bodies shower auspiciousness here and now.

Pekarzin, the noble monarch in Shambala,

Sublime Songtsen Gampo in the Land of Snows,

The glorious Drukpa lord Dudjom (Zhabdrung) in this realm,

We think of you in our hearts; protect us until we reach enlightenment.

Although the miraculous works of your body, speech and mind are inconceiveable,

How wondrous that, like the sun on the eastern horizon,

The best of your affection for beings of this land

Has again taken a physical form in Womdrong.

Thus, maintaining a fearless (Jigme) stoical bearing,

May the lion (Senge) of men, the lord of earth,

Decorated by the excellence of great power and wealth (Wangchuck)

Remain firm on the adamantine throne for a hundred aoens.

Having the darkness of oppugnant misfortunes cleared

By the blazing light of the laws of the dual system,

May the time in which we freely enjoy the feast

Of complete peace and happiness never pass.

In this Dragon country, the Land of Medicinal Herbs,

Maintained by the four activities of the glorious Drukpa,

May the rule of glorious Drukpa rise to the zenith

And the melodies of its fame resound like thunder.

Through being connected with noble aspirations and actions

In the current life and in all other lifetimes,

May all including myself, the King, ministers and subjects

Reach the realm of Excellent Mountain in Ngayab.

By the blessings of an ocean of Buddhas and Three Roots

By the power of the profound ultimate and conventional truths

By force of our pure and noble motivation

May my prayers be fulfilled as I wish.

These verses, commensurate to eight auspicious signs, are composed by Jigme Chokyi Dragpa, the one who holds the mere title of the 70th Je Khenpo. Since a long time, I have considered His Majesty Jigme Singye to be an incarnation of an extraordinary being on a spiritual stage. Recently through his recollection of past lifetimes, Jigme Tenzin Wangpo, the reincarnation of Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye has clearly indicated that His Majesty is an emanation of the great magician and dharma king (Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal). There are also many other evidences pointing to this. Thus, as an auspicious token of enhancing the peace and wellbeing of all beings in the southern land (Bhutan), this heartfelt prayer was made at Pungthang Dechen Phodrang on the 15th day of the first month of Earth Hare Year, on behalf of the nation which prospers under his compassionate care.

Important Note: The Je Khenpo, formerly called the Dharma Raj by orientalists, is the title given to the senior religious hierarch of Bhutan. His primary duty is to lead the Dratshang Lhentshog (Commission for the Monastic Affairs) of Bhutan, which oversees the Central Monastic Body, and to arbitrate on matters of doctrine, assisted by Five Lopen Rinpoches (learned masters). The Je Khenpo is also responsible for many important liturgical and religious duties across the country. The sitting Je Khenpo is also formally the leader of the southern branch of the Drukpa Kagyu sect, which is part of the Kagyu tradition of Himalayan Buddhism. Aside from the King of Bhutan, only the Je Khenpo may don a saffron kabney.

The birthday of the 4th Druk Gyalpo is also celebrated as Constitution Day because Jigme Singye Wangchuck initiated the development of the Constitution of Bhutan. The Constitution was adopted in 2008, after seven years of drafting. It is regarded as an exemplary stride towards democracy, as the King changed the country's political system from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy.

The peace and happiness we enjoy in Bhutan is a result of the extraordinary leadership of His Majesty King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Father of our Nation. On this special day, we join the people of Bhutan in offering our humble wishes to our beloved Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

On this special day, we join the people of Bhutan in offering our humble wishes to our beloved Fourth Druk Gyalpo. November 11 marks the birthday of the fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The 4th Druk Gyalpo KING Jigme Singye Wangchuck is the father of The 5th Druk Gyalpo KING Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. He was born on November 11, 1955 and succeeded to the throne at the age of 16, following the death of his father. During the reign of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Bhutan saw enormous progress due to modernization. The King ended total isolation of Bhutan by joining many regional cooperative bodies. Bhutan straightened its relations with neighboring states and even became a founding member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. By the age of 51, when most people are still striving to achieve their lifelong goals, His Majesty, at the height of His golden reign, abdicated the throne after having accomplished prodigious feats. Where ordinary people crave wealth and power, His Majesty crowned a new King, introduced democracy and handed over the responsibility of governance to His people. Such an act of superlative altruism was unprecedented in the history of the world.

One of the most important prayer activities on the Lhabab Duchhen Festival is to simmer mulberry. As long as there is a place to simmer the mulberry stove, the pilgrims will put their cypress branches into the stove, and sprinkle the barley grains, zanba, pour ghee, and so on.

In order to commemorate this Day, We Bhutanese Buddhists hold Buddhist activities in various temples every year to greet Buddha's return, promote the Dharma, and save all living beings. And the religious masses should reverently pray, turn their prayer wheels, and provide offerings in order for protection.

One of the most important prayer activities on the Lhabab Duchhen Festival is to simmer mulberry. As long as there is a place to simmer the mulberry stove, the pilgrims will put their cypress branches into the stove, and sprinkle the barley grains, zanba, pour ghee, and so on.

Lhabab Duchhen, is one of the four Buddhist festivals commemorating four events in the life of the Buddha, according to Buddhist traditions. Lhabab Duchhen occurs on the 22nd day of the ninth lunar month according to Buddhist calendar and widely celebrated in Tibet and Bhutan. In BHUTAN we celebrate this particular DAY as MOTHERS DAY, introduce by His Holiness Trulku Jigme Choeda The 70th Je Khenpo.

The festival is also celebrated in other Buddhist Asian countries including Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. Lhabab Duchhen is a Buddhist festival celebrated to observe the Buddha's descent from the TRAYASTRIMSA HEAVEN to earth. According to legend, the Buddha ascended the TRAYASTRIMSA HEAVEN temporarily at the age of 41, in order to give teachings to benefit the gods in that desire realm, and to repay the kindness of his mother by liberating her from Samsara.

He was exhorted by his disciple and representative Maudgalyayana to return, and after a long debate and under a full moon agreed to return. He returned to earth a week later by a special triple ladder prepared by Viswakarma, the god of machines. This event is considered to be one of the eight great deeds of the Buddha. On Lhabab Duchhen, the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied ten million times. It is part of Tibetan Buddhist tradition to engage in virtuous activities and prayer on this day.

THE 2023 DIVERSITY IMMIGRANT VISA PROGRAM- (Green Card through the DV Lottery)

The diversity visa lottery has to be a totally random process of selection. Bias, prejudice, racism, class, wealth, political views, status, and other unfavorable conditions have to be weeded out of the selection processes. The DV lottery does not select people. The lottery is designed to select applications from all of the applications that are processed into its system. There is no first come, first served. All candidates who have filed applications must undergo pre-screening through their applications for entry in the lottery. Of course, all applications must be filed electronically to be accepted in the process.

Millions of applications have to be processed through similar procedures. As these applications are processed electronically, they would be assigned codes and processing numbers for accessibility through computers. Paperwork would be bulky and cumbersome in the processing and selection of applications for the lottery. Each application is assigned a code and number for quick access and location. That might be the reason and purpose for the requirement for filing and processing applications electronically.

If the applications have passed the pre-screening tests, then the candidates are issued final notifications by being assigned confirmations that their applications have passed must for participation in the diversity lottery. If applications have been eliminated or have failed the process, the filing of another application will not be accepted (the applications would be mooted). By the time of the notifications, the pre-application process would be closed. Only one application per family is accepted. Similarly, names cannot be added to different applications. The applications would be eliminated from the lottery. All regulations and rules must be followed accordingly for acceptance into the diversity lottery.

Preparation is absolutely necessary for participation in the lottery. Passports must be current. Birth certificates and other viable documents must be available. Certain levels of education are acceptable for filing applications. Any person with higher education, including diplomas and unique skills, can be excluded from participation. Yes, applicants can be deemed or considered overqualified. They might be required to file applications for other types of visas in the system through employment with companies and corporations that assist potential foreign workers and employees in search of employment in foreign countries.

As applications are registered in the system and these applications have passed the scheduled processes to undergo participation in the lottery, the drawing is controlled electronically through the codes that are assigned to each application. Remember, this process is a lottery. As all selections are expected to be processed randomly, an assigned computer is assigned the process and task of selection.

The hands-off process eliminates manipulation, biases, and prejudices in selections. There is no winning strategy for entry in the DVD lottery. Selection is based on the luck of the draw. The lottery is a "wait and see" process.

The DV lottery selection is a "random selection" among "qualified candidates."

Once selected and your number is "current," you get a notification of "potential visa availability," and at that stage you have to fill out different paperwork and finally have an interview with a US embassy or consular officer.

You will never be 100% sure of getting a visa until you actually have it stamped on your passport. It is a complex but rewarding process.

The winners of the Diversity Visa lottery are chosen at random by a computer program, with a certain number of visas allocated to each region of the world and no one country receiving more than 7% of the Diversity Visas available in any given year.

Not selected.

It’ll be in the DOS files somewhere until the days of the DV pick are over by the end of September. If you're concerned that this will affect any visa application, the answer is no, because technically you're not actually applying for an immigration visa, all you’ve done is register for the opportunity to win the right to apply for an immigration visa, which is different.

The DV lottery is a totally random process carried out by an audited computer system at USCIS.
